Captive breeding and display
The captive Orange-bellied Parrot (OBP) population serves several important purposes, serving as an insurance population against extinction and supplementing the wild population through the breeding-and-release program.
The Zoo and Aquarium Association Australasia (ZAA) coordinates the OBP Species Management Program through a dedicated Species Coordinator, who makes recommendations about breeding and management to help support a genetically diverse and sustainable population.
Non-breeding captive institutions also support the species' recovery through raising public awareness and education, as well as allowing researchers to better study aspects of OBP health, behaviour, and biology in a controlled and accessible environment.
Listed below are links to participating ZAA-accredited captive institutions housing Orange-bellied Parrots.
